I play a water ele primary in PvE and I decided to take a look into a new build because the one I'm currently using is getting old. As I was looking at the skills, I realized something. The build I have is the only really effective build you can make with primary water magic. Aside from some minor modifications I can make, it only does damage and slowdown and interrupt (maelstrom). My current build is res sig, maelstrom, shard storm, ice spikes, deep freeze, frozen burst, water attunement, and water trident/ether prodigy.

well... your build isn't that good imo...

i use:
water trident (a must have, period.)
deep freeze
ice spikes
frozen burst
ice prison
maelstrom
water attunement/armor of mist (i prefer AoM)
res sig

this is a pvp oriented build though...
i think it's the best one, but i get your point... you can't really mix things up with water... but doing a water/X combo might be cool to try (X being another ele style of magic).

PvE? Maelstorm and Blurred Visage are awesome. The dmg is mostly poor though.

I used to use Water / Curses for PvE, worked nicely.

there are many different ways to setup water eles, and many of them are considerabley better than the setup you currently use. a few ideas:

my guildmate has had sucess with glyph of renewal + frozen burst...

a mind freeze + maelstrom ele can solo most monks pretty easy.

e/n can use water spells, rend, and soul barbs (direct damage spells are also hexes)

many teams like to have a water ele around to drop ward vs harm.

water trident is overrated. think outside the box.

A lot of the builds you guys mentioned are the "minor changes" I was talking about. Aside from the PvP-oriented builds, I've done most of the things you mentioned. I had thought about the curses secondary for soul barbs but I realized it wasn't enough extra damage to merit a skill slot. And thinking outside the box is exactly what I'm trying to do.

If I didn't think outside the box I would have found one build that worked marginally well and stuck with it.

Yeah, I have 2 different water eles, one with soul barbs to bost water hex damage and one that completely owns warriors (blurred vision, deep freeze, and wunnerful mesmer anti-warrior skills)

question: do water hexes count towards FoC damage? because then you can combine the two...

Yeah, I do the anti-warrior build a lot in PvP. It mostly makes warriors rage quit.

And I was looking into curses necro, FoC looks very very interesting. I had never really looked at it. I'll have to switch to necro secondary and cap it and see how it works out.

I think poeple have a real hard time thinking outside the box

heres an exemple:
have you tried (E/W) frost armor, conjure ice, about 3 warrior stances to alway be under 75% blocking and healing signet(which to be honest, you wont use often). All you need is 16 in Ice and 12 in Tactics and the rest in your weapon attribute (sword or axe)

Now theres about a dozen more wacky builds like that if you mix things a lot and try a little harder.

So few people think about one spell in the water line... ward against harm. It is great in both pvp and pve, as anyone in it gets an automatic 20-odd extra armor vs. both phys and elemental dmg, plus it has the great +60-odd armor vs. fire. greater conflag, anyone???

My Water Build is very similar to Mortalis, actually, with the difference that mine's a primary Mesmer (Fast-Casting is a great help, and actually makes me invulnerable to warriors in a one on one setting).

I use:

Ice Prison
Water Trident
Blurred Vision
Ice Spikes
Deep Freeze
Maelström
Armor of Mist
Ressurection Signet

It's able in PvE (great way to set up a fight. You get on ahead, slow the whole enemy group with Deep Freeze so your warriors can intercept the enemy.), and it's great in PvP (but you need to be very aware of your surroundings.

Some combos are barely used at all, which is a shame. A shutdown for an enemy goes like such: Ice Prison, Water Trident, Maelström, Water Trident (and then you keep Water Trident to death). Great to kill monks. I don't know if it's possible for a not Fast Casting Water, though...

Yes it does, which means you'll want to be N/E for the 16 in curses...

Pure water ele is junk, Water combined with a good secondary = mayhem...

Soul Barbs does come to mind...

Trying to think outside the box gets you bashed by elitists and logical people alike. There are some combos the game simply doesn't favor due to the fact that unless you're a cookie cutter or modified cookie cutter build, nobody with strategy in mind apparently will want you on their pvp team...

Proof? Who here who wants to win wouldn't mind having an Axe user that didn't bring: Eviscerate, Exe Strike, Frenzy, Sprint, Res Sig on their team?

That means all the "good" axe warriors worth having on a team have 5 of the same skill. Any other warrior is just scoffed at for being noob and inefficient...

Think outside the box? Doesn't work in this game where the COOKIE CUTTER BOX is THE ONLY BOX!!!

You mean all 6 points left? For a sword/axe/hammer attrib of 3? Either Tactics, or Water, or both, has to take a bit of a hit if that's your plan.

a pure water elementalist (or fast caster water, although energy problems occur) can be an asset (sp?) to a team.

in relic runs, he alone can destroy runners, because the hex can be removed, but you will have a couple more rdy to attack.

whenever you have a nuke heavy team, a water ele helps a lot as well. one deep freeze can keep the enemy team bunched up just for that extra meteor to strike (works for all the aoe spikers).

the water ele owns warriors left and right. ice prison, then armor of mist, then run away, trident, run away, trident. you wont be hurt and if they give up and go away, you can still trident them a bit.

monks can be shut-down well by a water ele, using ice prison, maelstrom and trident spamming, to keep the monk in the aoe of the maelstrom.

basically, i think a water ele is usefull for almost all teams, and i enjoy playing that ele most...

I play a support hydromancer. I use Ward against Harm a lot. Use it, keep everyone in it. Also, I do Maelstrom/Ice Prison.
